Cyclists should go down onto the River Walk via the footbridge adjacent to the Evangelical Church, Guithavon Valley, where is a sticky arrow on a sign post on the corner of Newland Street and Guithavon Street, and more signs at the bottom of Guithavon Street. Once at the sign post cyclists have several options
Option 1 – Head towards Spa Road (going under the railway) and follow the signs all the way to Braintree (about 11 miles). This is a super ride, largely flat, that goes through Ranks Green. The signs take you through Notley Green where you can either follow more signs to Braintree rail station (to perhaps get the train back to Witham) or go through Great Notley Country Park and onto the Flitch Way. This is all signed, no map needed.
Option 2 – follow the River Walk north towards Chipping Hill and then follow the signs all the way to Tiptree (about 8 miles) and beyond to Colchester. Again a super ride that goes down Cut Throat Lane, crosses the Braintree branch line and main railway line and heads off to Little Braxted (past The Green Man pub!) to Tiptree where you could refresh yourself at the tearooms at the Wilkins Jam Factory. Again the route to Tiptree and beyond is all signed.
Option 3 – follow the River Walk towards Armond Road and Sauls Bridge. Join Lawrence Avenue, and cross Maldon Road onto the newly re-surfaced section of the Blackwater Rail Trail. At the end of the rail trial, where it meets Blue Mills turn left and head up the hill to Wickham Bishops where NCN Route 16 joins NCN Route 1 (which ends up in the Shetland Isles!). Follow signs through Wickham Bishops to the Langford Road where currently the signs stop.
