Witham is a pleasant Georgian town with a history that dates back to the time of King Alfred, located at the very heart of Essex, midway between Colchester and Chelmsford.

Witham Town Council exists to actively defend, promote and represent the interests of residents within Witham, and is often the first point of call for those with a problem or query about local government services. The Town Council consists of 16 members; 2 representing the Central Ward, 4 representing the South Ward, 4 representing the West Ward, 4 representing the North Ward and 2 representing Hatfield Ward.

The Town Mayor of Witham for the Civic Year 2017-2018 is Councillor JoAnn Williams. Her deputy is Councillor Tom Pleasance.


The following local amenities and services are provided directly by the Town Council:

Closed churchyard in Guithavon Street; Christmas Decorations; River Walk; Whetmead Nature Reserve; James Cooke Community Wood in Maldon Road ; hiring of Town Hall; Community Awards and Grant Aid; some street lighting; town guide; Puppet Festival; tree wardens; consultee planning applications; Witham Voice; the Period Garden behind the Town Hall; some seats and benches; some litter bins;

Witham Town Council also works extensively in partnership with Essex County Council and Braintree District Council to serve the interests of residents, business and visitors in Witham.

The Town Council is a member of the Witham Chamber of Commerce and supports the Town Team in promoting Witham. It responds to requests to represent the town at functions and events. It represents the views and needs of the town following public discussion at council meetings or public consultation.

Community Support

Witham Town Council has a policy of supporting organisations which work within and for our community, helping their programmes of work with financial support, which in some cases, can indeed provide a vital lifeline for them.

Essex Council of the Year

Witham wins Essex Council of the Year Award

Witham Town Council recently won, Essex Council of the Year 2016 award at the AGM  of the Essex Association of Local Councils.

The Town Council were awarded for helping to shape the development of the town in the best interests of local residents, whilst recognising the Government’s house building targets. The Council was additionally recognised for delivering excellent services to the community and delivering many events, including the World War One Commemoration Drumhead Service which marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Witham MP Priti Patel congratulated Councillors for their efforts and commended the staff and Councillors for the high level of commitment they put into making Witham a better place to live and work.

Mark Squire added “this is a great achievement which reflects so well on the diversity of work that the Town is engaged in, and on Witham Councillors and staff alike – I am very proud.”
