Christmas Lights Working Party

Witham Town Christmas Lights
The Christmas Lights Working Group was set up in 2005 by Witham Town Council to take in hand the development of the Christmas Lights in the Town centre.
The Working Group consists of representation from Witham Lions & Lioness Clubs, Witham Chamber of Commerce, Witham Rotary Club, Witham Carnival Association and the U3A.

In the first year the Working Group set about contacting licensed suppliers of Christmas street lighting systems. The next step was to invite quotations from three of these companies to present before Council for budget approval.

Upon being given the go ahead from council the lighting layout was decided upon and the order placed with the selected supplier. The designs are changed each Christmas.

Each year a competition is set up for the best decorated premises in the town centre based on the theme selected for that year. There is trophy for the winner, the Val Lewis Memorial shield donated by Witham Lions. This year, 2007, the theme is “ Branching Out “.

Each year there are two coffee mornings held to enable the public to view the light layout, meet the Working Group, pass comments and take part in a raffle to raise funds to expand the Christmas lights.

We have now been able to purchase the lighting display for the Christmas tree that is placed in the Town centre. Our aim is to eventually expand the lamp column displays into the side roads leading off the High Street.

With this in mind we invite shops and local businesses in the town if they would wish to make a donation to the Christmas Lights fund. In return they will receive a support plaque to place in view in their shop or office.

How much are we looking for? We would welcome donations of any amount from £50.00 upward.

Our aim is to improve the displays each year and to try and raise funds to augment the Town Council budget allocation. We also aim to give the residents of Witham a Town to be proud of in future years.

We welcome comments and ideas as to what people would like to see and if possible we will try and incorporate them. You can contact us with your comments by e-mail on tony.stote@btinternet.com
